Nicotine Lozenges
Nicotine lozenges are the newest form of old the counter
nicotine replacement product. As is the case with the nicotine gum, the lozenge comes in two strengths: 2 mg and 4
mg and can be purchased without a prescription.
The manufacturer recommends using the
nicotine lozenge as part of a 12 week program to quit smoking with additional recommendations to take one
lozenge every one to 2 hours for six weeks, then one lozenge every 2-4 hours during weeks of seven through nine
with the subsequent reduction in the dose to one lozenge every 4-8 hours during weeks 10 and 12.
The manufacturer also recommends the
following:
Ø Stop all smoking once use of the lozenge begins.
Ø Do not use the lozenge if you continue to smoke or use any form of
tobacco.
Ø Avoid eating or drinking for 15 minutes before using the
lozenge.
Ø Stop the lozenge until it is fully dissolved, avoiding chewing or biting
it.
Ø Avoid using more than five lozenges in six hours or more than 20 per
day.
Ø Discontinue use of the lozenges after 12 weeks and consult your doctor if
you feel the need to continue to use them.
